The town
of Silver
Spring is located in Montgomery
County, Maryland.
Just inside the beltway, it is the third most populous area in
the state of Maryland. Founded in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair,
it gets its name from a mica-flecked spring that flowed through
the south side of town. He was so captivated by the spring’s beauty;
he decided to build his house near it and named it Silver Spring.
Now dry, this spring is still visible at Acorn Park.
The Blair family is rich in political
history, as Francis Blair was one of the men responsible for organizing
the modern American Republican party, while his son, Montgomery
Blair, was Postmaster General under Abraham Lincoln. Francis
Preston Blair's grandson was the first popularly elected Senator
in the history of the United States.
The first suburban development was
established in 1887, and Silver Spring
has not stopped growing and flourishing since, and today remains
one of the most heavily populated and modernized cities in Montgomery
County, Maryland.
Downtown
Silver Spring is the most urbanized part of the town and in
the past seven years, has undergone a major revamping, with the
addition of new restaurants, entertainment, new
homes for sale, new condos for sale
and major shopping venues. It has even become a major business
hub, boasting the location of Discovery
Communications world headquarters.
Many people have revamped some of
the old town houses and many of them are now contemporary town
Silver Spring homes for sale to the public for around $450,000.
